Doctoral Programme (Full Time)

The primary objective of the programme is to prepare young men and women for challenging opportunities in teaching, research, and consulting. The programme is designed to impart knowledge, develop skills and create attitudes relevant to teaching, research and consulting. The programme requires coursework in general management as well as in the area of specialisation, followed by a doctoral-level dissertation. In addition to the Institute faculty, resource persons are also drawn from reputed business schools in India and abroad.

The programme emphasises both skills and knowledge in management. Some of the skills are generic in nature: self-development, communication, qualitative and quantitative research methods, computing and information technology. Other skills are more specific to functional areas of management. In a similar vein, a general appreciation of management concepts is provided through the courses at preparatory level, while research-based knowledge is imparted through advanced courses offered by the functional areas.

The candidates would be required to undergo one-year pre-requisite course work equal to 32 Credit Hours before formal registration to PhD Programme.

The candidates would be required to study four PhD courses equal to 16 Credit Hours. The course work shall be treated as prerequisite for PhD A common four credits course Research Methodology, covers areas such as quantitative methods, computer applications, research ethics and review of published research in the relevant field, training, fieldwork, etc and needs to be covered by all PhD students. Remaining three advanced courses pertain to functional area chosen and the theme in which the candidate wants to pursue his/ her research.

Research Publication

The research scholar has to publish at least one research paper in refereed journal and make two paper presentations in conferences/seminars before the submission of the thesis for evaluation and produce evidence for the same in the form of presentation certificates and/or reprints It is a pre-requisite for scheduling the final oral defence.

Passing Standards

A PhD scholar has to obtain a minimum of C+ grade in each course and minimum CPI 6.00 in course work in order to be eligible to continue in the Programme.


The avarage duration for the completion of the progamme is 4 years including course work and maximum of 6 years [Till submission of thesis].

Provided however that the Director General, on the recommendation of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research, on completion of 6 years, permit the research scholar to renew the registration on payment of due fees up to 7 years.

The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years in the maximum duration, i.e. up to 9 years. The women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave / Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of PhD for up to 240 days and male research scholars shall be eligible for paternity leave as per University rules once during their entire tenure.

Attendance Requirement

A research scholar, who is pursuing course-work as a part of his PhD Programme, is expected to have full (100%) attendance in each course. However, a maximum of 30% attendance deficiency may be condoned by the Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research for genuine reasons.

Award of the Title

After the doctoral students of the Institute has satisfied all the requirements of the PhD Programme, he/she will be awarded the title of ‘Doctor of Philosophy” by the Nirma University.

A Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding Statutory Regulatory body with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent Grade “B” in the UGC 7 Point Scale. Candidates appearing in final examination can also apply provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria by June 30, 2019.

Online Application Form:
Applicants should complete the online application form with non-refundable admission processing fee of  Rs.1,250/. The payment should be made online by credit card/debit card/net banking.

Entrance Test:

The applicants are required to appear for the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Institute of Management, Nirma University.However,  the candidates who are UGC NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/GPAT/Teacher Fellowship/M.Phil qualified are exempted from the Admission Test.The Test will be held on May 5, 2019 at Ahmedabad, Mumbai Delhi, Indore and Jaipur as deemed suitable by the Institute.

Note: The Institute reserves the right to drop or add any test centre.

The Admission Test will have Two Sections as given below:

  1. Research Methodology  – 50% Weightage
  2. General Management    –  50% Weightage

Each Section will carry 30 Questions, and duration of the Test will be one hour. The Test will be objective type with multiple choice questions.

Personal Interview:

The candidates obtaining a minimum of 50% marks in the Admission Test will qualify for the Personal Interview.

The final selection for admission would be based on the candidate’s performance in the Admission Test and Personal Interview.

Research Fellowship

The Full-Time research scholar will be given Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for first three years and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for one year.

Provided, however, the fellowship will be commenced from the date of original admission and the SRF after three years will be approved by the Dean of the faculty concerned on the basis of the satisfactory performance.

Payment of Tuition & other Fees

The research scholar registered for the PhD degree shall be required to pay the tuition fees and other fees as prescribed from time to time (term-wise) from the registration to the date of submission of thesis.

Residential Programme

The PhD Programme is a full time residential Programme.

The institute has PhD (Full Time) programme, and PhD (External) programme. In PhD (Full Time) programme, the research scholars have to come to institute every day and fulfil all academic requirements while pursuing their doctoral studies. In addition, they need to devote 32 hours every month for academic/ institutional work assigned by institute. In case of PhD (External), the research scholars initially visit the campus for their course work, and then they undertake research work under the guidance of their PhD supervisor.
