In its quest to promote excellence in management, the Institute has launched an autonomous doctoral programme since 1999 leading to the award of Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). However, after the Institute of Management becoming a constituent of Nirma University in 2003, the degree of PhD of Nirma University is granted on completion of the programme.
The primary objective of the PhD in Management programme is to prepare the aspirants for challenging opportunities in teaching, research, and consulting. The programme is designed to impart knowledge, develop skills and create attitudes relevant to academia and the corporate. It is a premier source of rigorous and inter-disciplinary research in all areas of business management and public policy. It includes Economics and Finance, Marketing, Human Resources Management and Organizational Behaviour, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Information Management and Decision Sciences, Production and Operations Management, Public Policy. The programme requires coursework in general management as well as in the area of specialisation, followed by a doctoral level dissertation. Curriculum Architecture
The programme emphasises on both skills and knowledge in management. Some of the skills are generic in nature: self-development, communication, qualitative and quantitative research methods, computing and information technology. Other skills are specific to functional areas of management. In a similar manner, a general appreciation of management concepts is provided through the courses at preparatory level, while research based knowledge is imparted through advanced courses offered by the functional areas.
Pre-Registration Course Work
Pre-requisite of the formal course work requires the PhD candidates to undergo one-year mandatory course work equivalent to 32 Credit Hours before formal registration to the PhD Programme. This required coursework will develop knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of management and expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research.
PhD Course Work
As a pre-requisite of the course work, the candidates would be required to study five PhD courses equivalent to 16 Credit Hours. Two common courses viz. Research Methodology (4 credits) and Research and Publication Ethics (2 credits) are required to be covered by all PhD students. Remaining three advanced courses are pertaining to the functional area chosen and the theme in which the candidate wants to pursue his/ her research.
Passing Standards
All PhD scholars have to obtain a minimum of C+ grade in each course and a minimum CPI of 6.00 in course work in order to be eligible to continue with the Programme.
Duration
The average duration for the completion of the programme is 4 years including course-work and maximum of 6 years [Till submission of thesis].
Provided that the Director General, on the recommendation of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research, on completion of 6 years, permit the research scholar to renew the registration on payment of due fees up to 7 years.
The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years in the maximum duration, i.e. up to 9 years. The women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave / Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of PhD for up to 240 days and male research scholars shall be eligible for paternity leave as per the University rules once during their entire tenure.
Attendance Requirement
A research scholar, who is pursuing course-work as a part of his PhD Programme, is expected to have full (100%) attendance in each course. However, a maximum of 30% attendance deficiency may be condoned by the Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research for genuine reasons.
Award of the Title
After the doctoral students of the Institute have satisfied all the requirements of the PhD Programme, he/she will be awarded the title of “Doctor of Philosophy” by the Nirma University.
Research Fellowship: The Full-Time research scholars will be given Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for first three years and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for one year. However, the fellowship will be commenced from the date of original admission and the SRF after three years will be approved by the Dean of the faculty concerned on the basis of the satisfactory performance.
Payment of Tuition & other Fees: The research scholar registered for the PhD degree shall be required to pay the tuition fees and other fees as prescribed from time to time for all the Terms from the registration to the date of submission of thesis.

Residential Programme
The PhD Programme is a full-time residential programme. The scholar is required to stay at the Institute hostel. However, a scholar may seek permission for exemption from the hostel on justified genuine reasons.
